The region’s humus-rich, moist soils have a positive effect on cucumber growth. The Spreewälder Gurken (Spreewald gherkin) is protected by European regional indication law which means this gherkins cannot be produced anywhere else. The Spree Forest (Spreewald) is a large inland delta of the river Spree and a historical landscape located in the state of Brandenburg (Germany), about 100 km southeast of Berlin.
