What to do with diaper rash? First aid for a sore bottom!
Diaper rash is a common form of inflamed skin (dermatitis) that appears as a patchwork of bright red skin on your baby’s bottom. Rashes from irritants can get a secondary infection with yeast. Yeast infections are bright red. They can be raw and weepy. Diaper rash is a common condition that can make a baby’s skin sore, red, scaly, and tender. Most cases will clear up with simple changes in diapering. Most diaper rash is caused by friction that happens when sensitive baby skin is rubbed by wet diapers. Diaper rash is a skin problem that develops in the area beneath an infant’s diaper. Diaper rashes are common in babies between 4 to 15 months old. They may be noticed more when babies begin to eat solid foods. Diaper rashes are a common skin concern for infants and toddlers. They can cause red splotches and scales to appear in the genital area and on the child’s bottom. In some cases, rashes might spread up the child’s legs and to the stomach. Diaper dermatitis is inflammation of the skin under a diaper. Baby bottoms have to endure a lot: they are constantly exposed to heat, moisture, bacteria, fungi, aggressive digestive enzymes from the stool, acidic urine and other irritants. In addition, only a little air gets to the skin. Baby skin, with its thin and more permeable horny layer, has to struggle particularly here. According to studies, diaper rash is one of the most common skin problems in babies. You should try to prevent that. In other words: Nappy rash is a very common skin condition. It happens when the skin on your child’s bottom is damaged and irritated.
Here’s what a diaper rash can look like:
- – Red and inflamed skin in the genital or buttocks area
- – Possibly weeping areas, blisters or scales
If your baby or toddler has a diaper rash, you should take it seriously. For one thing, it really hurts your sweetheart. On the other hand, infections such as fungal or bacterial infections can quickly develop on the inflamed skin. Experts therefore advise reacting immediately, even if the skin is only slightly reddened:
For a slight reddening, you can use panthenol cream, for example. However, if the redness does not improve after a few days, you should see a pediatrician about it. In the case of severe, widespread reddening, weeping areas, fever or purulent areas, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Here’s how to prevent diaper rash
Since a baby’s skin is so sensitive, it can happen even with the best care: your baby’s bottom is red, the skin looks irritated.
The baby’s skin sometimes reacts particularly sensitively when the child’s organism has to cope with additional challenges, for example when an infant has a cold. Even if your baby’s diet changes, such as switching to solid foods, their skin may react. This is usually temporary and any irritation will subside quickly. If your baby has permanent or very frequent skin irritation in the diaper area, it is best to ask your pediatrician for advice.
Studies show that there are some successful ways to prevent diaper rash/red bottom:
Frequent swaddling! How often should I change my baby’s diaper? The skin should be kept dry and clean. So change the diaper as soon as your baby has a bowel movement, when it feels swollen and full, and at every mealtime. It is better to wrap once too often than once too little.
Gentle cleaning! With irritated and irritated skin, it is even more important than usual to gently and thoroughly clean the baby’s buttocks when changing the diaper. Protect the skin by gently dabbing it clean, for example with a damp baby wipe or baby oil. Irritated skin does not tolerate wiping or rubbing.
Lots of fresh air! Your baby should kick or play without a diaper as often as possible. The fresh air is really good for the bottom. But make sure that the room is warm enough (at least 23°C / 73.4 °F). Warm socks and a thick, soft pad (possibly with moisture protection if you have sensitive floors in your apartment) make kicking even more comfortable. If your baby still whines, you should put them back on and try again another time.
Panthenol cream or wound protection cream. In the case of irritated skin, the skin’s protective barrier has already been attacked. Therefore, after careful cleaning and drying, apply a thin layer of panthenol cream. It soothes baby skin. It also forms a light, transparent and protective film that keeps moisture and irritating substances away from the skin. A wound protection cream is particularly suitable for prevention.
You can also use all of these measures as a preventive measure. This is particularly important when it is foreseeable that the skin in the diaper area will be exposed to particular stress. Some examples of such situations are:
- – On longer car journeys in summer, when a warm, humid climate can quickly develop in the diaper.
- – When your baby has diarrhea.
- – When your baby sleeps longer and longer.
In such situations, it is particularly useful to preventively apply a wound protection cream to protect the skin. If you have any of the following signs, you should see your pediatrician as soon as possible:
- – Severe, widespread reddening with weeping areas
- – fever
- – Purulent spots
- – Vacancies
- – Rash: pustules or pimples
- – If the redness has not gone away after 3-4 days
