Celebrate your own Oktoberfest at home
The name ‘Oktoberfest’ means ‘OCTOBER FESTIVAL’ in German. It’s an annual festival held in Munich, Germany, and the whole world knows it as the world’s largest horse-racing event. However, the world knows it as much for its delicious beer and delicious food. The festival first started in 1810 to promote trade within Germany, but it soon became a celebration of Bavarian culture- including traditional folk music and dance. The 187th Wiesn will take place in Theresienwiese from September 17th to October 3rd, 2022. This means that Oktoberfest takes place every year in Munich from mid-September to the first weekend of October.
Participants at the Oktoberfest celebration wear traditional clothes and enjoy drinking beer while representing their hometowns. The celebration starts in September and lasts until October. The celebration takes place at various locations throughout Munich, including inside a horse racing track, under a tents and in front of an Oktoberfest hall. Each area has its own beer garden where different brands of beer are served. Throughout these areas, people celebrate in traditional Bavarian outfits with mascots and posters of famous people in Bavarian clothing from past decades. Although the celebration is fun for everyone, a lot of people from Germany attend so that Munich can showcase its culture to the world.
The event starts six weeks before the actual anniversary date- which is the first Sunday of October. On that day, everyone attends the festival with their family members and friends. All attendees must be at least 18 years old with a ticket to enter the festival. Inside the Oktoberfest hall, people drink beer and eat Bavarian food such as weisswurst, pork knuckles, sauerkraut and German potato dumplings. There’s also live music playing throughout the hall, which is where many famous bands play during the festival. After eating, most people stay inside the hall to drink more beer or to dance to live music. Everyone has a great time celebrating Oktoberfest; it’s one of the world’s greatest festivals!
The celebration continues for eight weeks with new events happening every week until October 31st which is known as ‘Reinigungstag’ or ‘Cleanup Day’. During this day, attendees leave their festival clothes behind and wear their everyday clothes back home. They also clean up all of the trash from their local area and bring it back home with them. After this day, people start preparing for Christmas by buying decorations for their homes. They’ll also start cooking traditional German foods for Christmas dinners at that time.
